Geography
Physical Geography
The region is dominated by the presence of the only major northern pass from which it takes its name.
Political Geography
The free city of Aulron’s Gate falls formally under the rule of the High King, but the rulers were granted freedom to act as a feif generations ago to facilitate a more neutral trade environment with the Ghans. It is the constant target of attacks from other parties but it remains strongly allied with both Vo Gabrov and Ralstaa. Even birdmen are generally welcome as traders here and Vargor have their own district, the ruling family for the past couple of generations (close to three hundred years) have been deeplings, though here they are known as Mhulak, and many ralstaans have not made the link between the two races. Men and Mhulak are totally intergrated and there is a large Mhulak population, especially in the richer quarters where much of Duke Munsun’s large extended family live. While the City itself is a fief, the territory south of it is administrated by Munsun in the name of the High King of Ralstaa.
Munsun rules here, but is obligated to consult an elected caucus over any issues of law or policy. While his decision is still his own this caucus is mostly made up of influential traders who could bankrupt him farely quickly if they felt the need, so he tends to court them if not be ruled by them. Caucus members are elected for life or until they are voted out by three to one decision in the caucus. There are no regular meetings and the caucus can only assemble when Munsun calls them, but he makes a habit of doing this monthly, in addition to meetings in response to any situation.
Social Geography
The combination of all of the races of Ralstaa; Dunsain, Birdman and some Lleweithe with the Ghans, Vargor and Mhulak of the Duchies in the north makes for a mixing pot of so much rich and often starkly contrasting culture and society. Furthermore the Free City and it’s territories, essentially extending to the Gate itself, are neither Ralstaan nor Ghan in architecture, society or atmosphere, making Aulorn's Gate something in between the two and yet totally unlike either.
