The Axe of Craig

When the Clan of Craig fell on the Red Field at the sword of the Red Hand; Sarn Valdur, Caralon Craig’s ancient halberd was hewn in two by the sword carried by the Red Hand. When Arch-Duke Craig’s retainers retrieved his body a week after the battle the two halves of his halberd were brought back with him. The halberd, called Neimas the Crownkeeper, was laid in the family crypt in its two halves. Legends grew quickly around the weapon. It is said that one day a true Craig heir will return to Caer Craig, and he will be known because at his touch Neimas will again be one. Once a year young men come forward on the anniversary of Caralon Craig’s death to lay their hands upon the weapon. As yet no one has had any effect upon the artefact, but still every year a select few boys of noble bearing come forward to try and claim the Craig lineage and its crown. The royal agents who now rule Craigbyrn do little to discourage this rite, doubting the authenticity of the legend, yet still it persists.
