Daelin Nole

The irrepressible unmasked master of the T'Ovari, Daelin Nole is known as a merchant, a boisterous drunk and a prominent philanthropist in the City State of Southaven. He is also known as an avowed enemy of the state, though his popularity and the care with which he chooses which activities to be made public and which to deny involvement with has thus far prevented the powers of Southaven from moving against him. In fact it seems likely that his lofty position with the Guild of Shipwrights would insulate him from even more than what the Koric Guard can presently pin on him.

Daelin Nole is a man nearing his middle years, broad shouldered and heavy set, and beginning to spread about the gut. His dark, long hair is beginning to grey at the temples and his tan, weathered skin is forming into a multitude of tiny creases. His eyebrows are bushy and expressive and the drooping moustaches he wears make his mouth seem set and his jaw hard. A long scar runs from his left cheek down over his chin to his throat, a memento of a time before men feared bearing arms in his presence. Though his outward appearance is almost fatherly, and his smile sly and inviting, his light eyes don’t twinkle with mirth like those of a grandfather, they shine with cruelty and barely repressed fury like those of a killer. Few men are both brave and stupid enough to meet his gaze, and those men generally come by accidents involving falling face first onto knives.

He is not a subtle man, and hates men who play games, and this, perhaps, is why he has unmasked himself for all to see as one of the five masters of the T’Ovari. Since the group are openly declared outlaw and the penalty for membership is death his move was a brave one, however Nole feels he is safe from reprisal, and enjoys the respect and power granted him by his position as one of the most influential guild-bosses outside of Lierkist. And indeed, thus far in any case, he has been proven right.

Daelin started life, predictably, as the outcast bastard son of a merchant house, living in the gutters as a pickpocket. He knows the city like few others and could navigate its alleys and avenues blindfolded. After being taken in by an orphanage on Canal street, which was primarily a front for organized pickpocketing and burglary, he rose quickly through the underworld of the city and became an agent of his T’Ovari predecessor. In a surprisingly honourable move Nole never publicly unmasked his master after he had the man murdered. Similarly both the merchant family of his origin and the orphanage are gone, burned to the ground with their owners in them. In a way Nole has wiped his history clean behind him, like a man sweeping his footsteps from the sand as he goes.

Obviously Nole's closest allies are the other masters of the T'Ovari, and though he is uncharacteristically coy on the subject it is likely that he knows some or all of their identities, as security against them rather than by a function of his role. Nole is married, but his wife Laura, a good two decades his junior, has yet to bare him any children. Aside from these attachments Nole is the Southaven chair of the Guild of Shipwrights, and also controls a lucrative shipping business, owning three caravels that make regular runs along the Thairon-Lierkist route. He even maintains limited interests in Kembar. While it seems very likely that more than a mere coincidence of name links Daelin to the High Prelate of Southaven Markham Nole, there is no suggestion of how loosely these men may be connected. Certainly nothing in either man's well documented history suggests any close blood ties between the two, and they have never personally met.

However probably the most significant relationship in Nole's life is that with Boerd Candrel of the Korc Guard. Candrel has sworn to destroy Nole, and dogs him at every turn. As yet he has never had a single victory, and Nole doesn't really take the church soldier particularly seriously, but Candrel is clearly willing to devote his entire life to this vendetta, and that makes him dangerous.

Character Traits

The Heart of the Matter (2)

Nole has a habit of cutting straight to the point, and saying those things others might skirt around. He is not afraid to offend, nor to confront, and some respect his forthrightness, others are intimidated by it, and still others are grossly offended. But while he hates to skirt around something important, this has never stopped him being a very convincing, and bold outright liar.

Unmasked (2)

Daelin Nole is an outlaw, wanted on pain of death. But he does not hide, he lives mere doors from his pursuers, and occasionally passes them on the street. And yet he is still a free man. The tension that this creates must eventually break, and many feel that the decent thing for Nole to do would be to make a show of hiding, just as the authorities make a show of pursuing his fellows.
