Ikar

Native to the starwood, Ikar are enormous birds of prey that the Ralstanns have harnessed as airborne mounts. Terrible creatures, with massive wingspans, they are able to carry a grown man in full armour on their backs, or lift a horse from the ground in their terrible talons. Largely solitary, groups of ikar will come together to compete aggressively with griffins for hunting grounds, and these bloody clashes are one of the most awe inspiring sights the wilds of Ralstaa have to offer.

Potency

Visage

The massive ikars stand close to ten feet tall when they roost, and have a wingspan of over twenty-five feet. They closely resemble an enormous eagle, with heavy head and hooked beak, powerful shoulders, and shorter, broader wings than most birds of prey. Their legs and talons are particularly powerful and muscular, and their tails are able to fan out in a full arc, so as to better lift their prey. What is most remarkable about the ikar are their colours: they are not the drab browns of eagles, but rather fantastic, vivid colours like parrots, the most common being a flaming orange on the head and underside of the upper wing, with white underbelly, with black and white speckled breast, and black and white banded feathers on the wing itself. Sometimes a red-brown strip crosses the shoulders and the top of the wings, leaving the bright orange and white on the underside, making the ikar more drab, with just its orange head showing when it roosts.

An ikar is large enough, and powerful enough, to take a full grown hrid (their preferred prey), mule, or even a horse into the air with them. With large targets they are fond of then dropping them. They are silent hunters, so it is said that the ikar cries only when it is about to drop its prey to its death. A courtesy to those below.
