Irian
The Irian language has remained relatively unchanged for hundreds, perhaps even thousands of years. Irian is an ancient tongue, but it has also been one of the most influential languages in the history of the landsmen, second perhaps only to the Mhulak language in the whole world, and its conventions have permeated the landsman civilizations on all sides of the Irian territories. Especially prevalent in modern Haedrasian, Ahlonian, and the various tongues of the Kelorn landsmen, Irian is occasionally called the foundation of a modern world.

Irian Conventions

Irians tend towards quite amorphous sounds, made with the back of the tongue, and use a few clusters of quite soft sounds. They have a distinctive difference between the sounds associated with masculine and feminine words.

Consonants
Masculine: v, r, m, n, d, b, l, s, g and th, hl, ll clusters
Feminine: b, h, s, l, m, n, d, z, y

Vowels
Masculine: a, y,o
Feminine: a, i, u, ae

Irian Names

In Irian culture the surname (family name) comes before the given name, is always monosyllabic, except in extremely unnusual circumstances, and is separated from the given name by a hyphen rather than a space. Thus an Irian name would be formatted 'Sul-Yenammu', where 'Sul' is the family name, and 'Yenammu' the given name.
