Kloris en-Sara

The Count of Kel Saratose comes from one of the most ancient and noble bloodlines in all of Allornus. Kloris en-Sara traces his line back some nine centuries, and his prolific dynasty has left an immense extended family to ensure the continued longevity of the line. The ageing patriarch is without an heir, and he knows that he must soon name an heir, but his reluctance to do so has put Kloris at the heart of a raging storm of politics, with his every relative and their factions vying for his favour, and equally to discredit their competitors in his eyes. The presence of the cunning and hungry Kenu has only made matters worse.

Old, but not frail, the Count has the look of a man who has spent as easy life of luxury. Wrinkled, a little overweight, and with storm-cloud coloured hair and pale eyes, the count's eyes and cheeks sag heavily, and his sloping brows and long noes gives his face a fierce angularity. Kloris' pate is completely bald, but his beard is long and coarse, as is the fringe of hair around the sides of his head. The count has largely lost interest in his outward appearance, and dresses in thick woollen robes and heavy cloak for warmth and comfort. The count's voice is as strong and rich as it was twenty years ago, but he lacks the determination and passion he had in his youth.

Few who were not around in the count's heyday would think that the old man who now rules Kel Saratose was once a master of diplomacy and politics, but maintaining his post as count in a land of such intrigue, a lack of external threats means that internal conflict is rife. The old man could once pull the strings of the various factions of Kel Saratose like a puppeteer, pitting one against the other to keep them all occupied and prevent one from elevating too far above its fellows. Sadly, now, the count simply doesn't seem to care. Old and tired, Kloris knows that his right to name an heir is enough to keep the county under his sway for the rest of his reign, and he has decided to simply leverage his advantage, and take the time to enjoy the advantages of age and rank. He takes a certain sort of mischievous glee watching the manoeuvrings of his relatives, baiting them along for his own amusement.

Descended from what may be the single longest-reigning noble family, after the Imperators of Haedrasia, in all of Allornus, Kloris was born into privilege. As a youth he was given the best in tutelage, sent to Kel Wacuite where he studied at statecraft under some of the finest diplomats and sages in the western lands, and warcraft at the hands of a Haedrasian master. He came to the throne late in life, spending much of his time as heir travelling the lands on the shores of the Inner Sea and seeing how the other nations of the region operated. By the time his grandfather passed, handing Kloris the domain, he was a seasoned and worldly man. During the course of his twenty year reign Kloris has proven himself to be a canny diplomat, staying a step ahead of the intrigues of Kel Saratose's court. He thwarted a half dozen coups by distant relatives, brokered truces between Amir and Bakkar, and Cal Manar on various occasions, kept the Kenu council in check and put down a number of uprisings by pitting his opponents against one another. Now, in the twilight of his years, the count is slipping, and the schemes of his relatives are going unchecked, and they have been allowed to build factions. If the count holds out much longer the county might descend into anarchy.

Kloris married once, but his wife tragically only a few months into their marriage, long before he became count, and Kloris loved her so dearly that he swore he would never marry again. In being true to this promise the count is without heir. Of the powerful factions at court, Kloris's cousins Monkhier, who seems to have no designs on rulership, but has a stalwart following who would like to see him on the throne; Amberon, who seems to have the largest faction at court; Karam, who has the popular support of Ashkel; and Velak who has the support of the treacle country. Kloris' younger brothers Corbun and Konrad both have more legitimate claims, and both men are of suitable age and maturity, but after years of living in Kloris' shadow they have not been able to build up substantial factions. Kloris' most trusted advisers are his steward Balthor and the Kenu sage Ku-Elukin, both of whom have served loyally and wisely for the count's entire reign.

Putting on Heirs (3)

In his later years one of the Count's greatest pleasures - perhaps his only pleasure - has become playing his potential heirs off one another, in a contest to win his favour. Of course, they have too little faith in the old man's failing mind to realize that succession has become a game for him, or else think him above risking the realm's security so foolishly for the sake of his own amusement - but to outsiders it is quickly apparent.
