A Long Sword is a very simple cruciform, straight bladed sword with two cutting edges averaging about three to three and a half feet in length, structured around a fuller or double fuller blade and a tang extending right down through the grip to the pommel. The cross guard is usually broad, suitable for catching blows from another sword right up to a large axe. While the blade is usually not completely counter-weighted by the pommel, the added weight of the blade adds a good deal of striking power and dexterity to the weapon in the hands of a skilled wielder. The blade itself is relatively thin, and only the layering of metal over the cutting edge gives it the strength it needs to stand up to other, sturdier swords when sparring. The longsword is a favorite of the Haedrasian legions as a close combat weapon when they discard larger polearms, and is popular in the Inner Sea and Southlands regions too.
