The Maethian Arm
On this rocky and brutal peninsula, cliffs dropping into angry foam and land rising to mountains that rise like predatory jaws to seize the sky, the rebel nation of Maethas vies with sinister subterranean goblyns, and once-kinsmen who bay for blood, as much as the hard land to survive. The Maethian Arm is not a place to choose to live, and yet live the rebels of Maethas do. Victims of the intractable determination, and inscrutable motives of a stony regicide, and his ruthless supporters. It is a hard lot in Maethas, but little choice remains.

Geography

Physical Geography

The Roughlands, especially the Maethian Arm, are characterized by an overwhelming ragged brownness, and this is very much the impression people are left with here. The land is essentially the top of a very deep mountain range that leads out to sea, but the rise of the land is only apparent at the very centre of the Arm where the Giantspines jut suddenly and near vertically from a landscape characterized otherwise by jagged hills, deep gulches and rocky outcroppings. The Giantspines tower over the orange-brown landscape and the ragged, lifeless hills even barer of life than the Roughland to the east. There are no trees here except those growing on the sides of great rocky rifts where the only life of the Maethian arm cling to the sides and the few creatures live in the silty-soiled, damp and shadowy floors of these canyons.

The coast is brutally beautiful. Huge cliffs hundreds of feet high rise sheer out of the sea. The seas are immediately deep and have the blue-black flecked with foam on the surface that characterizes unfathomable depth, but the coastline is littered with collapsed stacks and outcroppings of land cut away from the mainland and standing tall in the middle of the raging ocean. Just below the surface more jagged remains of collapsed rock leave the sea as barren and empty as the land above it. A cluster of rocky islands, including Vagabond Island, are all but inaccessible, but can be seen from the coastal cliffs.

Political Geography

The power of the Black Baron is absolute over Maethas. There is no landed nobility, no concept of land ownership, no other political power in the land, and the Baron and his followers go unchallenged. The Baron’s rule is heavy handed and draconian. His followers hand down punishment as they see fit to a loose code of law and the army has total power here, and represents the only government structure. Ironically however, despite being based around this harsh military discipline and martial law the land of Maethas is largely criminal, and criminal networks capable of getting goods that the treasonous ruling regime could not wield almost as much power as the government who are forced to overlook and work through them.

The army in Maethas is the only structure. The two townships of Doraust and Kalis each have a commander who controls a handful of captains who each command a division of troops. The army is roughly cobbled together, but have been drilling in and renewing these divisions since the coup, nearly half of the commanders are still those who were appointed at the nation’s inception. They have a loose set of guidelines about conduct, but generally the army takes what it needs and enforces punishments on lawbreakers as they see fit. Conversely these bully-mobs collect no salary and no internal bureaucracy exists, they simply answer to the existing structure because it maintains their authority and because it is preferable to total chaos, or, worse, being overrun by vengeful Highdunn forces and facing trial for treason in Thairon.

Social Geography

Most people live in utter poverty in the Black Barony, and despite a hard line government much criminality must actually be government sanctioned, the people are desperate and ruthless. The land is hard and life is painful and difficult, but there is no way out. The people can’t run away, they can’t flee Maethas because they are outlaws, and because there’s no guaranteed safe passage out of Maethas for small groups. There are some scattered goblyn settlements here and there, the largest of which is Yar Dorash, but generally even they don’t have much interest in the lands of Maethas, though networks of tunnels do cross throughout the Giantspine and rumor tells of a huge network of goblyn mines forming a city of tunnels and chambers under the mountains somewhere. The Maethian army is cocky and well equipped thanks to goblyn traders bringing metal weapons for trade, and forms the only real social elite, and the entirety of the ruling class.

Poverty is the defining feature of Maethian society, and while people aren’t called to pay taxes or tithe goods to their liege lords like they would be in other lands, they also have very little opportunity to make a living in the worthless terrain. Criminals and smugglers tend to be the ones with goods and even they get shaken down by the army, however there is a glimmer of hope. People have bought small herds of mountain goats from goblyns, who in turn buy them from giants, and these herders are forming a new kind of moneyed elite in Maethian society that might one day work in a similar manner to the steaders of Reddown, however at this point Maethian society is proving to be anything but sustainable, and they may have to face an exodus from their rocky prison soon.

The Maethian Coup

On the Seventieth day of Summer of the year 1568 of Hanna’s Count just before the evening meal Dane Riese III, Baron of Thair, King of Highdunn took an audience with an envoy from the court of Baron Odo of the Roughlands regarding scouting information on the goblyn presence in the Maethian Arm. With him were his elite guard the Kingsown, commanded by Dietric Kessel, a veteran from the forces to the east and the royal master-at-arms. He met the envoy at the Kingsown barraks where he was housed due to renovations taking place in the guests wing of the royal palace. Not long into the meeting King Reise was overpowered and executed by the King’s Own. Kessel himself removed the King’s head with an axe and the body was left on a bunk in the barracks. The rebel Kingsown then formed up around Kessel and fought their way out of the palace and fled Thairon, narrowly avoiding the arrival of the Earl of Roen and a large Tresser Veldt army. These are the facts as they happened, as any resident of Highdunn today knows. However the account of the coup begins much sooner, and far fewer know the details. Tomorrow I lose my head by order of King Eldin Riese for my part in his father’s murder. Herein I provide my confession for posterity.

Dietric Kessel had conceived of his plan to kill the King of Highdunn some three seasons before the act of regicide itself. He enlisted me during the King’s yearly visit to Baron Odo’s court, and it was Kessel who conceived of the scouting party that would both place me on the Maethian arm for the two-season period he required and that would have me in audience with the King in the closing days of summer when the bulk of Highdunn’s army would be assisting a force from the Veldt on a routine expedition along the Forest Way, as far from Thairon as possible. Initially I was approached by Anduin Derrowmere, an agent of Kessel. Kessel’s name never arose and I had no way to make any association, but still I am sure that had I refused I would not have lived past that night. Retrospectively however I was not privy to any plan for conquest, or for the assassination of the young Prince Eldin, and it now seems that Kessel had always planned to be forced to flee the city, but then I was told we would hail in a new regime. They paid me in iron, gold would have been suspicious, but the iron was brought to me at the Arm, where I oversaw a scout party constructing an ‘outpost’ we called Doraust. Under the fort, Derrowmere’s men secretly smuggled food and weapons and lumber under cover of night, and my payment was included in this. Iron ore. Enough to make me wealthier than even Odo, my lord and master.

Kessel had the unswerving loyalty of the Kingsown. I’m sure it will be omitted from this account but few men who had met him had any love for Dane Reise. With his most loyal men involved in the plot Kessel arranged a foolproof escape strategy. He planned every movement for that day right down to the hour. Kessel took only the most loyal of the King’s Own into his confidence. Those he was not sure he could trust he planned to try to sway on the day, and if he could not he would kill them. Our network was not large, but Kessel chose such key people, and planned to sew such chaos in Thairon that it need not have been. Derrowmere was not the only bandit-king Kessel employed, but he was certainly chief amongst them. They were scattered in tiny cells all along the route from Thairon into the Roughlands, and they would see the conspirators through the intervening area and then take up a position guarding their rear and continuing to flee until the entire operation arrived at Doraust where stockpiles were sufficient for every man expected to be involved, a little under a thousand. The beauty of it being that the King’s money had built the brand new, impenetrable fortress we would flee to.

When the day came I have never been so nervous, but Kessel was ice cold. I had arrived nearly a week and a half before to find that Kessel had employed a servant to arrange for the renovation of the guest wing, so that I would have to be put up in the King’s Own barracks, where I would have ready access to my co-conspirators. This was the first time I had directly met Dietric Kessel. The man was as cold as stone. His plan was meticulous, perfect, and his confidence in it was grim, determined and absolute. I was both in awe and terrified of this demeanour. I tried to question him but Kessel would not speak to me even in absolute private, and I began to think maybe I had been misinformed, maybe this was some trap. Until the moment he struck the King’s head from his shoulders I didn’t truly believe him a traitor. That was the brilliance of the man. We fought our way easily out of the Palace, its guard had no expectation of an attack from within and the King’s Own were ruthlessly efficient, and knew their roles exactly. When we fled the city however an array of the warriors of the church met us by the city’s eastern gate. They were ambushed by the first cell of Derrowmere’s bandits so as the rebels avoided them, but lagging behind the main body of the force and unarmed as I was I was taken. Now, with the promise of a fast death over my head I relate this to a chronicler. May Eldin Riese do what he wills with it, his father’s blood still stains my tunic.

People

Races and Nationalities

There are only three major groups in Maethas, and they tend to be spread quite sparsely spread over the Maethian Arm. The men of Maethas form the smallest but most concentrated grouping, they are regular Ahlonian stock, though the exposed conditions has left them universally dark and ruddy skinned, and rather than pursuing any fashion they tend towards long, straggly hair, the men go unshaven and they wear clothing of goatskin and plain wool, and generally maintain an almost savage appearance. They are isolated to their two large communities, though Doraust remains primarily a military community, and they tend to identify strongly with their hometowns, and since the two have a decidedly different nature it is not difficult to see why.

The goblyns of Maethas are similar to those of the rest of the Roughlands, though more of the darker-skinned nocturnal sort seem to move around here. Goblyns have come into very close contact with men here, and perhaps a quarter of the population of Kalis is made up of goblyn families. Most speak at least a little trade-tongue and many of the people of Kalis have developed a working knowledge of Talthakee, producing a dialect loosely bastardized from both. The goblyns are slightly more populous than the men, though their greater mobility as a people means that there are far fewer native goblyns, rather many will come to the Maethian Arm either to shelter from the patrols of Baron Odo or to trade with the landsmen. Goblyns, naturally living in small family groups in the Roughlands, have begun to emulate human settlements, embodied quite clearly by Yar-Dorash, the trade town outside Doraust.

Other than Goblyns and men however, giants have a major presence in the Arm. The original residents, they may number fewer than the populations of men or goblins but considering the tiny familial clans giants travel around in their concentration here is greater than anywhere else on the Isle. Several large clans like the Bushuk or the Noi move their immense herds around the Arm seasonally, but generally they leave large groups of people alone. However lone travellers are still likely to be eaten if they wander the wilds for too long.

Flora and Fauna

Little or nothing is native to the Maethian Arm, even the seas are barren of life. The animals in the greatest numbers are the herds of shaggy mountain goats that the giants keep. Many have gone wild and formed a native population, and now that men have also begun keeping them their population is in flux. In response to the large numbers of goats, lean, dun coloured jackals have also moved down to the arm, but they tend to be scrawny and malnourished because they have not yet mastered finding water in the harsh, rocky landscape. Samsuns remain as common on the arm as they are anywhere else, and their individual ranges are often smaller and more packed together. They can be spotted fighting over territory now and again by the braver traveller, and tend to be a little smaller and browner than those further inland.

Sea life is tenacious and sparse, but deep water coastal creatures such as octopi, jellyfish and squid are fairly common, as are large clusters of the hardier shellfish like limpets, clams and oysters. These can sometimes be seen carpeting rocky outcroppings off the faces of the coastal cliffs at low tide. In summer when the waters tend to be calmer seals also migrate here along with schools of orange roughy and snapper. Barracudas, usually starved for prey, come out of their underwater caves to prey on the migrating schools of fish, and occasionally in more open areas orca do likewise, though they are frequently smashed to death against the rocks when they stray too close to the coast.

Bird life is scarce, but a small breed of buzzard called the Roax seems equally at home feeding off the carrion of both land and sea. Usually the sight of something in the sky is a sure indication something nearby is dead or dying. Around the Giantspines large vampire bats have also taken up a rather significant residence, mostly surviving off sleeping goats they have also been known to go after a sleeping man or goblyn if the opportunity presents itself.

Little other than hardy desert grasses and tumbleweeds can grow here. Flax bushes with exceptionally deep root systems harbor their own little ecosystems around their bases, and flax has always been an important material for clothing, building and all manner of things to the people here. Patches of lusher grass or clover, as well as little stagnant pools that house all kinds of insect life and a few things interested in preying upon them all spring up around the scattered flax copses, but they are few and unreliably sparse.

Notable Individuals

The Black Baron of Maethas, Dietric Kessel
The Black Baron of Maethas is one of the most despised men on the Isle. The survivor and leader of the uprising against Dane Reise and a wanted regicide, the Black Baron faces flaying unto death should the King of Highdunn or his men ever get their hands on their old master-at-arms. Kessel is a man in the dawn of his seventh decade. Once powerful his advanced years have cost his weight and breadth but he remains strong and sound. His face is hard and stern and heavily lined but with firm set jaw and alert intense eyes, and his skin is tanned and weathered. His hair, once dark, is now iron grey and thinning. Still tall and imposing the Black Baron has seldom been seen in public without full mail and sword at his hip since the coup. Despite his age those who have tested him have found him still deceptively powerful and lightning fast, and more than once he has bested assassins sent against them after they have bypassed his guards.

His Blessedness; High Prelate William Hawthorn
William Hawthorn is something of a mystery to the people of the Isle, especially those of Highdunn. In the first place he is an ordained High Prelate of the Church of the Dioune, and a blessed member of the council of High Prelates, and even a former dean of the Basilica at Southaven but in the second he serves the post of national religious leader to an unrecognised nation seen to be nothing more than a haven for bandits and revolutionaries, and his mere presence seems to justify the boarders of Maethas in the eyes of the divh. As a result most men seem torn between obedient adoration and bloody retribution in his presence, and this has begun to weigh upon the hefty but devout High Prelate.

Anduin Derrowmere
As the Black Baron’s lieutenant and the commander of the boarder patrols of Maethas, as well as one of the few surviving original conspirators, Anduin wields considerable influence throughout the fledgeling nation of Maethas. Anduin was commander of the inner city uprising during the Maethian coup, and while Kessel was put in touch with him through a series of contacts, no one has ever made it clear quite what Derrowmere did before the coup. He certainly has some unpleasantly suggestive talents.

Culture

Architecture

Lumber is a rarity in Maethasm, and the stone of the land is either too soft for building or too hard to quarry. The early buildings around and in Doraust Keep itself are all of the characteristic brown-black stone of the coastal cliffs from which they were sourced. Many of these structures reflect the haste with which they were built, haphazard and with grass jutting from cracks from which it can never be quite eradicated. They are usually low, sloping structures with timbered roves and covered with woven grass that is constantly blown away by the fierce squalls. Single rooms, occasionally partitioned by animal-skin screens are the norm, and with little real economy there are really no shops or other civic structures.

The newer structures however differ markedly. Modelling their techniques on the goblyn buildings of the Roughlands, the Maethians have begun to build in timber-framed adobe. Because they are inexpensive and simple to build many of these structures are quite elaborate with multiple rooms, and even very occasionally two levels. These rooms have the characteristic ochre dust colour of the Roughlands, and seem to rise from it almost organically, however they do require a lot of maintenance, and since the majority of the residents of Maethas have greater concerns than home repair they have taken on an abandoned, slummish look in comparison to Goblyn settlements.

Diet

Predominantly the people here eat cheese, root vegetables, mostly potatoes and their various by-products. The goats are far too valuable to slaughter, and so goat meat is only eaten by those who are prospering or on special occasions, particularly religious festivals or when traders arrive. This unbalanced diet tends to leave most Maethians with a heavy layer of loose fat that sags from their bellies, giving them more the impression of grotesqueness than starvation. Ale remains one of the nation’s chief imports, and Roughriders and other smugglers make a killing moving what they can steal into the blockaded Barony.

Water is also a rarity in Maethas, with wells having to be extremely deep, cut through solid bedrock and usually drying in the space of a few months, and even then it is seldom clean, so as a result the common people actually predominantly drink milk while potentially tainted water is used for washing or cooking. Huge crops of Roughlands grasses are farmed to try to keep the goats well fed, so that this supply of milk doesn’t run out, and hay and healthy fields of grass are possibly the most valuable commodity at the moment.

Religion and Philosophy

Maethas has its own national religion too. With a lack of any religious guidance the warriors of Maethas have taken the Diounic faith and converted it specifically to the worship of Koroth as a warrior divhi. Called the cult of the war divhi by those few who feel the need to give it a name, they have accepted William Hawthorne as an agent of Koroth, but their religion is a more active one, usually taking the form of martial contests such as wrestling or sparring during religious festivals. Because of its youth the cult has little formal structure of teachings, but warriors believe quite firmly that only a warrior can be initiated, and that Koroth will only usher his brother warriors into Bliss when they die, with greater rewards for those who die in battle. Some members of the cult can work themselves into a ferocious fervour when they fight, and are so convinced of this that they are completely without any kind of fear when they go to fight. The cult also encourages savagery and ruthlessness, condoning any kind of violence against ‘unbelievers’.

Aside from the odd warrior cult there is William Hawthorne’s small following of those whose religion was important enough to them that they have felt the need to pursue it in their new rebel state. Indeed, many people are drawn to Hawthorne simply by the hard line doctrine of the Cult of the War Divhi, eager to hear something that offers them a chance for salvation that their warriors do not. It is unthinkable that the Cult of the Black Sarith has not made some foothold in the beleaguered Maethas, but as yet they have not yet deigned to show themselves.

Transportation and Communication

Mules have trouble and wheeled transport is completely useless in the isolated and rough settlements of the Black Barony, the Roughriders of the Roughlands come in and out of the boarders with smuggled and stolen goods but seldom stay in the impoverished nation and they generally charge too highly for people here. As a result the people of Maethas have very little mobility or communication beyond the various raiding parties formed by the army. Samsuns are actually the most common form of transport here but due to being both rare, impossible to breed and nearly as difficult to train they remain exceptionally expensive commodities. Ironically in a nation where people live free of vagrancy laws people find it almost impossible to take advantage of their mobility. For the most part male goats not used as studs are the only pack animals, but obviously cannot be ridden despite their giant size.

The sea remains even less traverse-able than the rocky mainland, and the extremely few fishing vessels, lowered by rope and pulley from the cliffs of the Maethian Arm, aren’t suitable for travelling any distance, and require devoted polers just to keep them steady while the fishermen ply their trade. All except the bravest of sailors stay well out to sea around the Arm, but occasionally pirates will come to the Arm to trade stolen goods or flee the Leirkist navy.

Common Pastimes

The spare time of the folk of Maethas is generally occupied with simple survival, but gambling remains popular, and bully squads will often stake entire territories on games between their various leaders, making gambling a risky and often bloody affair. People also indulge in drinking heavily, which also tends to lead to violence, but this is isolated to when alcohol is available, which is usually only for a few weeks after a major shipment has been smuggled into the nation.

Bully squads occupy themselves with minor turf skirmishes when they don’t have a contract to pursue, and because these seldom lead to fatalities they will usually attract a crowd of onlookers, thrilled by the spectacle of combat. As a result people have actually come to identify strongly with these local bully squads, and also bet goods on the outcomes of these little skirmishes, though if the combatants get wind of these bets they usually demand a cut.

Political

Political System and Military

The social elite of the Black Barony are all former Kings Own, Kessel’s inner circle. These men man and occupy Doraust and savagely repel anyone not of their group from Kessel’s stronghold. Kessel’s direct lieutenants are all former bandit lords, they have all the contact with the people, many of whom are escaped vagrants, and administrate Maethas barely enough to have it considered a functioning domain rather than just a particularly lawless section of the Roughlands. All Maethians are free citizens and can claim whatever land they can hold, Kessel has proved a very hands-off ruler and tends to encourage tenacious independence, but resources are extremely limited so this has only led to fierce and usually blood competition. Kessel makes few edicts, gives no audiences and commands his inner circle almost as if he were under siege by the human detritus that are his citizens. He conveys what few orders he has through Derrowmere and other similar underlings, but their edicts are so often contradictory that it seems that they use his name to justify their own rule rather than to implement his. The people for their part are awed by the dour regicide, and feel safer merely steering clear of their ruler.

Police and Armies

There are two levels of legal authority in Maethas. The Maethian army, really the remaining Kings Own and a few new inductees, man Doraust Keep and act as raiders occasionally, penetrating into the Roughlands to raid military encampments administered from the Tresser Veldt to steal equipment, food and raw materials and demolish concentrations of enemy strength. These men are hardened veterans, already the upper echelons of the Highdunn military at the time of the coup, their military training has served them well, but the years in exile has hardened them and made them tru survivors. Also thanks to Goblyn trade the rebel Kingsown are usually far better equipped than the Highdunn soldiers.

The more general legal enforcers are the bully squads that seize chunks or territory in and around Maethas’ two settlements. Rather than keep a standing army the bandit lords who control he law simply offer bounties on any criminal brought to justice by any other citizen of Maethas. All the bully squads need to do is bring evidence of the crime and evidence that the individual has been punished to their leaders and they are paid a small reward. The laws are unclear, and there are no punishments set to crimes, but bully squads who get too overzealous are generally massacred by real soldiers. As a result many men's only method of survival is to join one of the steadily growing squads and begin punishing their neighbours for whatever crime they can find, invent or fabricate, and the situation is rapidly escalating out of control, but at the moment the various lordlings under Derrowmere simply find his manoeuvrings amusing.

Economy

Major Industry and Trade

Goat herding and theft make up the cornerstones of the Maethian economy. The army raids the military camps in the Roughlands and after they’ve had their pick of what they take the rest is redistributed amongst the people or else sold to rough riders and pirates when they occasionally come over the boarders. A very few people are learning from the goblyns in Yar-Dorash to mine, and trade food with the Goblyns for raw iron ore. Iron smuggling is by fare the most profitable thing for a Maethian to do, though they dare not cross the goblyns and their warriors, so what little they can trade for seldom constitutes a living, but most smugglers are happy to carry iron ore into Highdunn in return for materials less than a tenth in value of what they sell them for. Fishing and gathering shellfish, though exceptionally hazardous provides a secondary source of food and despite requiring a great deal of valuable timber many people have willingly given up their roves to start careers as fishermen, as variety is in such demand. Most households are self sufficient, with a couple of their own goats and a root-vegetable garden, but Maethas produces no real goods of it’s own, and it’s only real devotion is to producing a working brewery to make whiskey out of the orange tinted sweet potatoes they grow.

Daily Living

The people of Maethas have an exceptionally poor quality of life, people herd goats or are in the army, and the army tend to double as bandits, the folk walk a fine line between criminality and starvation every day, and every time the sun rises it’s the dawn of a new day of desperation. People tend to survive hand to mouth, and the strongest take what they want and prevail. A few cunning individuals have risen in power by anticipating needs, suck as a few men who spent their early years fostering huge fields of grass for the hay they anticipated the need for, but even they must back up their claim with force - usually by buying the local bully squad. People don’t travel, they don’t pray, they don’t really even laugh much. They just go about their business with the grim certainty that here, at least, they can live another day, while if they were to run they’d face worse at the hands of the Highdunn patrols in the Roughlands.

Today on the Maethian Arm…

The Maethian Arm is a savage, unforgiving land, dangerous to its residents, deadly to the unwary. On the Arm life is a struggle and death is never far away, starvation is rampant at Doraust and the dead are left to litter the streets. There are not-so-subtle whispers amongst the bully squads that if they could unite they might be able to get to the keep’s obviously bulging stockpiles. Of course it’s almost inconceivable that they could work together, and even if they could the thought that they could take Doraust away from the garrisoning Kingsown is completely absurd. Still, Kessel’s fewer and fewer public appearances, and his even fewer displays to demonstrate that he is in power here is likely to lead to plots like this and maybe worse. Mistrust and contempt more than awe is what the people feel for their ruler in Doraust, and surely an attempt on the Black Baron’s life, not just his supplies, is not too far off.

To make matters worse rumour has it that the Black Baron is entertaining an envoy from Highdunn, and he is actually considering surrender with the promise of lifetime imprisonment for himself and his co-conspirators in return for handing over the criminal residents of the barony. Other rumours say that he is deathly ill and the strange visitor is a healer from Highdunn smuggled in to prolong his life as long as possible. Already men who believe this are planning their ascension. Whatever the truth what is fairly certain is that a small party uniformed as Kings Own rode into Doraust some five nights ago under cover or darkness and the gates were opened to them and they were ushered inside the walls of the rebel bastion. As is the norm, petitioners sent to the gates of the Keep to demand explanation are ignored, and efforts to gain entry are answered with lethal force.

Recent almost precognitive military movements disastrously intercepting Maethian raids has led to a certainty that there is a spy somewhere in Doraust itself, but conjecture is wild as to who that might be. Perhaps, people whisper, Kessel himself is feeding information to the King of Highdunn in the hope of returning to his homeland, vindicated. In Doraust itself these rumours persist amongst Kessel’s most loyal, and while they would never suspect their leader, even they are convinced that someone isn’t what they seem.

Finally a giant tribe known as the Noi have begun to encroach more and more into what the Black Baron sees as Maethas’ sovereign territory, their leader, Nagara has claimed all Maethas as his property, and the rebel Kingsown’s numbers are far to few for an outright confrontation.
