Monkhier En Sara

The grim and capable Monkhier en-Sara, Preceptor of Kel Saratose keeps the reign of the count in check. Intrigues and jostling for favour plague the court, but Monkhier has no patience for such politicking. A career soldier, Monkhier's military record is somewhat dubious, as his tenure has mainly seen the hunting of small Org bands and lone ogre, but the strict discipline and regimented lifestyle that Monkhier led when he was merely an officer has given him an unsubtle intolerance for diplomats and aristocrats.

Long-faced, sunken cheeked, and lantern jawed, Monkhier's features are strong and his archaic mutton-chop sideburns give him a leonine aspect. The preceptor wears the marks of battle on his face proudly. His nose is bent, a sign of being broken more than once, and a long pale scar runs from his creased brow across the bridge of the crooked nose and onto his cheek. He kept the helm that saved his life from that terrible wound, and it is cleft almost in two. Monkhier keeps his unruly, dark hair tied severely back. The preceptor seldom moves without a crisp march in his step, and his face wears a disapproving scowl on most occasions of state. The preceptor is proud of his ceremonial black tabard, and wears it belted over a heavy parchment-coloured robe, and while he favours a spiked flail, he wears a stout mace at his hip.

The Preceptor of Kel Saratose is renowned for impatience, and his dislike for talk. A man if action, Monkhier is happiest when he is active, and tends to plough forward. The pace can be methodical and cautious, but nothing galls him more than sitting around talking through a problem when you could be solving it. Obviously, this means that he does not frequent court very often, and puts him at odds with the Kenu of Kel Saratose, who see him as barbaric and graceless. Monkhier likes structure and predictability. His day is firmly rooted in strict routine, and he is easily shaken when his routine is disrupted. Habitually judgemental, the middle-aged warrior disapproves of those who don't share his black and white view of the world. But when he meets a like minded individual, no one could find a more loyal, generous, honest or honourable man than Monkhier en-Sara.

Monkhier found his road to the rank of preceptor a rocky one. Born into the ruling house, his future was always secure, but not so certain. As a youth Monkhier tried his hand as a trader, captaining a fleet of ships, as a privateer hunting pirates on the Inner Sea, as an emissary, and eventually as a commander, charged with holding the eastern border. After years of driving away kai 'invaders' who strayed over the border and lending aid to the Temple of the Old Divh, Monkhier tired of seemingly menial duty along a secure border, and asked his cousin Kloris for transfer to the southern or western border, and instead the count created the post of Preceptor of all of Kel Saratose. Whether this was done to discredit other commanders, or to put someone he was confident had little interest in the throne in command of the realm's soldiers isn't clear, but it is certain that it was not sheer generosity that motivated the ruler of Kel Saratose. Whatever the cause, Monkhier has proven effective, and proactive in his post. Arranging forces to methodically rout out and hunt down the Org in the mountains and moving forces away from the Taurvann border to begin a programme of earthworks along the western border, and he has made some headway into contacting the Mhulak of the Pont in recent years regarding this wandering menace, though a lack of tact has cost him much on that front.

Monkhier has a wife, Marda, and three adolescent daughters; Anika, Tarna and Maril. He is the cousin of the count, as well as Amberon, Karam, Corbun and Konrad who all have large factions and firm claims to the throne. His younger brother Velak is also making ready to make a bid for the throne, but they two have hated one another for decades, and it seems more likely that Monkhier would help than hinder him. Monkhier has a fondness for taking young soldiers under his wing, and his current protégé is a youth named Tankred who seems promising, but Monkhier's protégés have a habit of dying trying to earn his praise. Monkhier himself, has meanwhile earned praise of his own. Learning to fight org with the Kai, the Wolf of Sodo himself gifted Monkhier with a horse, and it is one of his most prized possessions. Unfortunately some overzealous incursions over Hyd's borders have earned him the enmity of both the Satrap of Sorâne and northernmost Shars of Hyd.

Character Traits

A Man's Man (2)

The Preceptor respects warriors. He was raised around soldiers, and he knows what happens when words fail and naked weapons are drawn. This has made him something of a misogynist, and even for one living in an era not known for their gender equality, his opinion of their worth is rather low. To Monkhier women are to be protected, to raise the children and be obedient and quiet. They are a beautiful and valuable possession, and he finds vocal, opinionated, or even powerful women somewhat affronting.

To the Point (1)

Monkhier quickly tires of people who want to manipulate or charm him. He much prefers the simple back and forth of battle to the niceties of office, and though he would never be improper or ungracious, his level of engagement tends to wane quickly the more blandishments and felicitations are laid on, and he is impressed by men who speak their minds - tactfully of course.
