Pieter Mardok

Pieter Mardok deserted from the Highdunn army some years ago, and has been living as a vagrant field labourer in southern Whitehale since. This tall, powerfully built man is an obvious choice for any pressganging militia, but he has become cynical and sour over his lot in life, and his missing ear speaks clearly to just how mistreated he has been.

Description

Pieter stands close to six feet tall, and is broad of shoulder and long of limb. Most obvious about him is the horrible scar left by his missing right ear, and though he wears his jaw-length fair hair loose to cover it, he does so in vane. Pieter has small, dark eyes and a heart-shaped face with a large nose and a short, knife-shorn beard, which is darker than his hair. He attires himself simply, and seldom places much value in his clothing, as farm labour leaves it in poor repair, but his old soldier's kit is still well-maintained and kept in his pack amongst his other meagre possessions.

Personality

Pieter has become sour and cynical over the years, but has come to disappointedly accept his lot in life, swinging a weapon and having wounds heaped upon him over and over. It is fortune and constitution more than skill that have prevented Pieter from enduring any major injury worse than his judicial mutilation and he takes this as a sign that at least Koroth is watching over him, and while he isn’t devout he always makes sure to stop and make an offering at roadside shrines. While he can be wry at times, Pieter usually keeps his thoughts to himself, and waits for an opportunity to let his actions speak.

History

The dour Pieter was a native of Caenburrough, the son of a tailor, at only fifteen as a large lad he was pressganged into a group of watchmen in the service of the Earl, and from there into the army. Believing it was his ticket to freedom and the good life, with his own plot of land to work he took to soldiering readily, but it only took a few years of incessant battle with the goblyns of the forest to shatter his illusions, and make Pieter realize that only those very few who survived to retirement would benefit from the largesse of their commanders. Convinced that anything was better than their lost as soldiers, Pieter and five others made plans to desert. They bided their time and waited for the perfect moment, then one night when all but one of the conspirators were given sentry duty the men cut their losses and fled, each taking a different road, so as to be harder to follow. Over the years since Pieter has been surviving by selling the only skills he has; killing and bleeding. He has been caught and punished for vagrancy by a Kings Own in Whitehale and now he avoids cities altogether, staying in outlaw camps and selling his services as a guard to merchant caravans willing to hire outside the law.

Associations

Pieter travels with a couple of other vagrant labourers, Darun Combe and Dietr Hal, both men of more average stature, but both good workers and heavy drinkers. He has not seen his family in over a decade, and has no idea whether they are alive or dead. The local farmsteaders all know Pieter, and they all know he's a vagrant - how could they mistake his missing ear - but they have never had compunctions about using the cheap vagrant labour, and are happy to provide a barn or shack for labourers to sleep in and food from their surpluses in return for Pieter and his companions' services - after all, they have little use for coin.
