Reuban the Riddler

Reuban the Riddler is something of a legend in Balleymoore and even in the lands around it. He has been wandering the moors for as long as the men who dwell there can remember. No door is ever closed to him, because Reuban is a prophet, a man fated to foresee the whims of the gods, one who seldom brings good news but a man who has proven himself able to bring down terrible curses upon those who offend him or refuse him hospitality. Reuban will disappear for years on end, but when he appears he makes his presence well known, for he is accompanied wherever he goes by violent storms and strange winds that wail like mourners. It is said that he carries with him the death masks of all of those whose deaths he has foretold, amongst other legends the local people whisper about him. Something of an enigma, no one cares to risk his wrath.

Description

Reuban is a short, thin man of reedy build with wild fair hair and beard that stick out at all directions and obscures most of his face. The only features readily visible are his wide toothy mouth, which sports the broadest and most feral grin a man will ever see, and his wide, staring, ice-blue eyes; which are always wide and dark rimmed. His visage hovers between ecstasy and madness, and his accent is thick. When he speaks it is either harsh and boisterous, or in a rich, velvety whisper that is enchanting to the listener, and his words are always in rhyme and accompanied by a shower of spittle and an odd scent of wine and cinnamon. He wears clothes that would be foppish on anyone else, but so slight is his frame and so poorly does he wear them that they bear a sort of comical presence and uniqueness.

Personality

Though Reuban is often quite formal, he loves the common man, and is jovial and friendly always, but he despises the proud and aloof or the unfriendly, and retains a formal ficade; which he breaks occasionally with abuse and shocking profanity. He immediately knows whether or not he likes a man, and behaves accordingly, and little or nothing will change his mind. His hard headedness and temper are almost as legendary as his stories or his curses.

History

Reuban’s past is as mysterious as he is. Some say he was born centuries, even millennia ago, others place his birth at merely three score years ago. In any case his wandering has been documented over the last few decades. Many times he has appeared and his movement has been followed like that of a normal man, at others he covers hundreds of leagues in an evening, and sometimes he simply disappears for months or years on end. Men who offend him meet his lyrical and often unusual curses, but for those who open their doors to him he warns of impending danger or death. None have ever used his advice to avoid their fate, they are simply made aware of it. The most famous story of his curses is his releasing of the clandestine Horror that haunts the Kielshoene line to this day, and the secret of which they guard with their lives.
