Screaming Eels

Native to the bay of eels in Nardaan and a few large, deep bodies of water thereabout, the Screaming Eels have been the doom of many a foreigner. Voracious carnivores, the eels are also extremely talented mimics, these enormous eels, longer than a man is tall, have learned to wait just below the surface until they see a vessel coming. Then these natural mimics start up shrieking and calling for help in several languages. When a passing ship stops to aid what appears to be a shipwreck, the eels wait until a few gaff-hooks are lowered, and then pull sailors into the water, which quickly turns into a bloody feeding frenzy. If the vessel is a small one they will even smash the hull to get at the warm meat inside. It is because of the eels that no drowning man will ever receive aid along the coast of Nasis and Meldoki. When gullible sailors are scarce they will drag themselves onto land, waiting by the water's edge to lure a traveller to the water, or large predators by imitating an injured animal, or even make their way under cover of night into huts and livestock pens and drag away a choice morsel.

Aetherial

Remarkable strength, speed, and savage teeth all recommend themselves outwardly in the screaming eel, but its only truly remarkable ability is its mimicry.

Longevity

It is unclear exactly how long eels can live. One might assume that such a vast creature, in such hostile conditions would have a very short lifespan, but sailors regularly out in the Bay of Eels report being able to recognize particularly large specimens, usually from tell-tale scars, that have been in the bay for up to a century! And a particularly disturbing tale that most eventually hear around a fireside somewhere in eastern Nasis describes a white-bearded whaler waking to hear his long-lost-at-sea grandfather's voice calling him, and thinking it a spirit exited his house to find an eel on the shore calling him with his grandfather's last words. Many claim that the eel is no mimic, but that when it consumes a man, it consumes his soul, and by eating men's souls the creature enjoys a sort of immortality. If this is true, then the voice of the eels is in fact that of the spirits of the men it has consumed, trapped forever in it's gullet, and crying out in piteous fear.
