Spending the vast bulk of his life running not-so-legal goods between the great ports of the Inner Sea, Shadral Dreks was finally able to take command of his own galley when his predecessor fell afoul of a Lodeli commander, and was condemned to spend the rest of his life in the gaols of one of the many small fortresses that dot Lodel's coast. With Dreks known for near-crazed daring, and flagrant disregard for danger, close to half his crew left there and then, and it seems likely that the rest won't live to enjoy the spoils of their smuggling life.
Description
Dreks is unremarkable to look at. A life long sailor, he has the swagger that only a seagoing man develops from spending long on the swaying seas. Small of stature, and wiry, his compact frame conceals immense physical power. Dreks' dark hair falls to about jaw length, cropped rudely by a knife, and his chin is adorned by the light beard of a man who shaves only infrequently. Sallow cheeks and a long jaw are counteracted by eyes that shine like emeralds, projecting the man's fleeting elations, or desolate turns of temper. Dreks' left arm is marked by a long, livid scar, running from palm, out to the upper forearm, over the upper arm and around the top of his left shoulder, stopping just short of bisecting his throat. The injury came from the ropes of the vessel he still commands, and he says that he has spilt so much blood on her decks that man and vessel must now be blood kin.
Personality
Shadral Dreks may not be a name that strikes fear into the hearts of the sailors on the Inner Sea. He is not some infamous corsair, and has not had time to make a name for himself as a dastardly smuggler, but in the right circles everyone whose business to know, knows Dreks. Best noted for his lunatic courage, and his maniac strength, madness is an unavoidable conjecture whenever Dreks' name comes up. In truth, most find the man lucid enough, but he relishes those moments when death is close, and when he has the opportunity to defy it. More than once, battened below deck, his crew have heard Dreks, bound to the helm, literally laugh in the face of death - a thin, elated, manic sound that haunts those who hear it - but those who have shared the thrill with him become as addicted as he to increasingly greater risk. Beyond this, however, Shadral Dreks is a canny negotiator, devastating in games of chance, and fond of a hearty jest. But he is also known for dropping into violent tempers, and his barbaric strength in such times is rightly feared, and rumour has it that once, when a particularly unctuous opponent at a game of dice taunted Dreks' losses, Shadral tore the man's arm clean off.

There is no greater thrill for Dreks than cheating death - staring his own demise in the face. He may have a taste for gambling, but it is a pale substitute for this. And he is glad to take others on this journey. He may take foolish risks, but it takes true mettle to stare into the silent divhi's eye and laugh.
