Hemp and Bamboo
While winter brings snows to much of northern Haedrasia, the warm winds off the Bair of Suirene that herald the spring thaw make for ideal conditions in this often chill land for the two crops that they say are the backbone of Haedrasia's dominance: hemp and bamboo. Hardy, prolific, and prevalent in haedrasian goods, these two things, alongside the horses of the plains, have defined the Haedrasian way of life for centuries - since they came to Allornus long ago.
Hemp fiber is used for rope, textiles, paper, and to make the durable plaster that lines the interior of Haedrasian homes. Hemp seeds produce oil for lamps and cooking, horse feed, and also a kind of blackish flour unique to Haedrasian meals. Bamboo also provides a food source, with farmers eating the young shoots boiled, but more commonly it is used as a construction material to make furniture, and more importantly it forms a strong, light weight scaffolding that has allowed Haedrasians to build and maintain the massive civic buildings of their cultural heartland. Where hemp finds more domestic uses, bamboo is precious to legions on the march, because ladders, ballistae, mantlets, pavilions, lances, wooden training weapons, carts and wagons, chariots, and even stretchers for the injured and dead.
Hashish
A by product of the hemp crops of the flats and the south, hashish is used to make ritual wafers used during certain temple ceremonies, and in the hands of the templars it is perfectly acceptable, but because the visions it often grants are prophetic, or at least sacred, its use is heretical outside of temple ceremonies. Many hemp farmers will sample their crop by illegally extracting and smoking hashish, but such activities are considered tantamount to black magic by many templars, especially debasing the sacred hashish into choking vapours thought to be home to evil spirits, and where such activities are uncovered they are viciously punished. Perhaps this is why no black market trade in hashish has developed outside of the actual producers, despite its ready availability.
