The Gate Ward is the northern ward of The City, located where the great northern highway exits the city, and nearing the size and population of the South Ward as the northern provinces begin to grow again and trade with the lands beyond the northern mountains flourishes. The smallest and youngest of the wards, it ceased to be considered part of the Old Ward and was given it's own Provost some forty seven years ago, and has grow to resemble the middle city more than the wards where it is around major roads, especially around the Great Northern Highway. Buildings tend to be of red brick and stone with dark slate roofs and heavily shuttered windows. Specific areas are kept aside for herds brought in for sale, for Ikars to land and stable, and for extensive and famous ranches of Tohls Ikar breeders - bred in the city to make sure they are comfortable in the traffic and bustle of Ralstaan city-states. The only one of the wards not bordering the river, the Gate Ward only benefits from overland trade, but all of the traffic down the highway from Aulorn's Gate and the Ghan Duchies passes through the Gate Ward before entering the middle city, rather than the local trade that comes through the Old Ward. As a result there is more wealth and trade, but fewer professionals here.

The youngest ward is less divided than the other two, and only houses Naris, Voernal, Deresh and Ghiere control interests here, as well as the northern Bradenthyr Prince Shanan Uth-Mars. The Provost is currently not a member of any of these houses, but the retired knight bachelor Canan Uth-Travis of Breconn. He is firm but fair, and tries to mediate the differences between the four houses as each vies for position and jostles for the best land along the length of the highway. Because each house competes fiercely to make their districts the most popular and valuable for traders not willing to pay the gate tax, the Gate Ward is in remarkably good condition, and many main streets are paved as they might be in the middle city. Though the poorer districts, kept carefully hidden in the shadow of large warehouses, are at least as bad as those of the South Ward.
