The Lights

The most desirable region of The City is known as The Lights, and lies just west of the great gates of Rallah’s Keep, but not in their path. The Lights has the magical metal roofs of the inner city mostly intact, and where the roofs are damaged the broken plates are carefully collected and repaired. The buildings are mostly low, sprawling affairs that stop at least two stories short of the battlements of Rallah's Keep. Nearly all of the homes here belong to ranking noblemen and landowners, as well as permanent summer estates of a number of Kings and noblemen who can afford to be away from court, including the enormous fortified summer manor of Darran Caldare.

The Lights is generally made up of tall buildings, at least four or five levels, of distinctive red brick with white stone cornices and sills. The buildings still have a fondness for follies and details, but tend to be very separate, forgoing the confusing maze of skywalks and bridges and overhangs of the outer city for neat alleys and carefully kept garden-courtyards. Windows are filled with glass, even panes of colored decorative glass joined by lead. Blocks are frequently split by walled enclosures around large manor-houses, often having their own Ikar rookeries and stables, and gardens. These are the homes of the nobility of the city. Streets are broad and cobbled in pale yellow and red-brown stones, and lined with small trees, and even alleys are paved with channels dug down to the river, and these are flushed daily with water. The river here is relatively clean, and still captures the light in a way that won it it's name.

House Verne, House Lerent and House Loerdgard all have competing interests in The Lights, but Houses Kevvh, Deloene, Toricron, Voernal, Voere, Rein, Lerent, Cavish, Caldare and Loerdgard all have large, extensive estates here. This is the old, traditionalist heart of The City, and the Ralstaans are the only residents. The people here don't dress like the rest of the Tohlers, but in traditional Ralstaan courtly finery, and the Lights could be mistaken for the heart of Tohl Caldare or Tohl Dannis except for the wealth stretching in all directions out to the walls.
