The Old Ward

The original point where the southern section of the highway entered The City of Lights the Old Ward has been somewhat overshadowed as the South Ward has grown on the southern banks of the Silver River. Once this was the only un-walled portion of The City, stretching away down the banks of the Silver River, but today is the densest and most antique of the three wards, in some places buildings are nearly as densely packed as the districts of the middle city, and many of the structures here are nearly as old, and usually in much worse repair. Buildings in the old war tend towards timber with stone foundations, and older stone structures are often plastered to make them less obvious amongst the younger buildings. Roads are dirt and often ankle or at their worst knee deep in mud and horse droppings, and along the banks of the Silver River where this problem is at its worst the locals wear a wooden sandal strapped to the bottom of their shoes that elevates them a few inches.

The people here tend to be slightly wealthier than those of the other two wards, which is to say they they are comparable to citizens in any other Ralstaan city-state. The professionals of the wards are still mainly found in the Old Ward, with their shops and places of business along the Great Northern Highway where it passes close to the stinking Silver River. The river Things do venture this far downstream quite frequently, and so the banks of the water are avoided except in extreme circumstances, and crossing can only be made via a single ferry near the entrance to the ward. Though this doesn't stop many locals from building their own vessels out of old roofing, or copper tubs or other totally unsuitable vessels. Occasionally these brave souls don't ever make it to the other side.

The Prince of House Stakh controls extensive lands along the highway, but Houses Lerent, Cavish, Rein, Ellene, Derelle, Coumbh, Voernal, Tarkaan and Saege all also wield major influence over the Old Ward's land. The Provost of the Ward is Arran Cavish, cousin of Ghesele Cavish but he administers the office with careful fairness for fear of the retribution of Prince Lot Uth-Starkh.
