The Rookery

Traditionally most of the students of the university live in dormitories in The Rookery, and as a result the area is dominated by high rent, quality houses where a student can take up residence in a few rooms sharing a house and a household staff with perhaps half a dozen other students. Taverns and tailors are especially common here, as are scribes and bookmakers and sellers all keen to make their living off the ever-changing population of young nobles. While mead halls like the sign of the crossed staves or the sign of the silver dagger are famous throughout much of Ralstaa for the various exploits that have taken place there, the neighborhood is completely safe compared to the common districts of the city, and the rough and tumble brawls that take place are usually taken care of by any one of the numerous authorities based in or around the district before they get seriously out of hand.

The Rookery is similar in appearance to Templeton and Carrafield to it's north, with red brick buildings with large white stone cornices and ornate door and window frames. Glass is uncommon in windows here but not unknown. Buildings tend to have four levels with lots of decorative follies and elevated walkways, skywalks and balconies over mazes of alleys and courtyards. The Riverside feels more like a poor district, all of the decoration on the buildings, and most of the windows, face away from the slimy, sluggish river, and the Brooke Bridge has buildings all along either side so that the river cannot be seen while passing. Here paupers and beggars have moved into the muck, but more distressing still many reports claim that the Things from the Silver River like to bask on the muddy banks here, and drag beggars into the water for food.

The district's ownership is split between House Taliniere, House Kevvh and House Cavish, all of whom make a killing from temporary housing for the various noblemen doing their service. However The Rookery is also the most gang-affiliated area in all of Tohl, having Taliniere, Cavish, Ghiere and Kevvh gang presence, all of whom clash violently and frequently with one another, and with students eager to prove their newly learned martial prowess. As yet no one important has been injured badly enough for this to be an issue for anyone but the watch. The vast majority of The Rookery's population is upper class Ralstaan citizens, and the businesses around the district reflect this.

Notable Groups and Individuals

The local watch captain is the overworked and understaffed Kaltan Ur-Markham, whose magistrate duties are often difficult and dangerous for the man given the stature of some of the people the watch detain. The proprietor of the Riverside Dorms is an elderly woman that the students simply call 'mother rook', a woman who married a knight and lost her husband and all of his goods at tourney. She is a dearly loved institution. Finally Aganael the Sword Smith is a specialist in his craft, and one of the few men in Tohl who can be trusted to create the famous Knightly Warsword of the Ral Knights.
