The South Ward

The largest of the three wards, and the largest single district of The City is the South Ward. It has an estimated population of over two hundred and fifty thousand people and is the first place most travellers enter in The City. Larger and more populous than both the Gate Ward and Old War combined, the South Ward is also the poorest and least densely populated of the three wards. Not benefiting from the traffic of the Great Northern Highway just over the Silver River, nor getting much traffic from the river barges stopping on their southern banks, and not having quite enough space to produce enough food to make them wealthy, the people of the South Ward must make their living building and expanding their ward ever outwards at the behest of noblemen who want to draw in yet more settlers. House Sygard and House Voergard both have extensive interests here, but Houses Taliniere, Verne, Faelener, Taliniere, Derelle, Rein, Kevvh, Cavish and the Bradenthyr Princes of House Tyroen all have extensive properties here too.

Buildings of the South Ward tend to be cobbled together from the excess of the buildings of the Old Ward and the Middle City, and roads are haphazard and often end dead as a structure has been built across the path of the road. Closer to the agricultural hub of Bradenthyr, the South Ward coats its main roads with straw and gravel, but side streets are no more than mud, and few bother to clear the streets until they become so choked as to be un-navigable. Horses and mules are common conveyances here, but there is plenty of open space where an Ikar could comfortably land.

Notable Groups and Individuals

Adun Uth-Verne and Boerd Uth-Rein
Such is the size of the South Ward that it has two Provosts who share the extensive duties of the office. Adun Uth-Verne, uncle of Baron Verne, and Boerd Uth-Rein, a cousin of the Uth-Reins, however Adun, whose family's interests are much greater in the ward, is usually the more dominant of the two. He also spends winters in the inner city however.
