A few leagues off the eastern coast of the Maethian arm is a long, low island with silty beaches and crumbling headland along it’s western coast and damaged cliff faces constantly receding on the eastern ocean-ward side. Vagabond isle itself is a place of twisted, low beach trees that grow almost horizontally up the slope of the island, and frequent silty sandstorms whenever a westerly blows over it. The entire place is wedge-shaped and the ground is totally unstable. Whatever strange gnarled life exists there for long does so by clinging as deep and as fast as it possibly can so as not to be swept up the island’s slopes and into the sea.
Vagabond Isle was really Maethas before there even was a Maethas, and perhaps its presence should have been considered and ill omen for the regicide-barony that would grow on the mainland mere miles from the place. Many generations ago Vagabond Isle was home to pirate outlaws. Deserters from the Royal Navy seized many ships after the fall of Sigard, mostly those that were damaged and in port along the few still-friendly ports of Highdunn. Encouraged to flee by Highdunn sympathizers many of these vessels crews killed their captain and navigator and fled along the coast, unable to take to the open sea without a navigator. Fleeing what few forces the Earls Council could deploy against them, and the Kings Own reprisals of the King of Highdunn they stopped at the first part of no-mans-land where they could make a landing, and beached their vessels, forming a city of beaches and badly damaged ships.
By most accounts the settlement on Vagabond Isle lasted for as long as three generations before eventually disappearing, but reports could only be based on views of fishing vessels from the place by the few locals to the Maethian Arm. No one has been sighted in centuries, but it is unsure what still rests on the place. The Sigard Royal Navy has passed the place several times, and while they have never endeavored to land it is certain the ruined ships still dot the shore, probably with a wealth of the secret navigational instruments that the navy guards so jealously.
