Volten Coldeyes

The captain of the guard for Baron Sigar Ur-Ghiere of Tohl is the implacable Volten Coldeyes, so named because he has a stare that can nearly stop a man's heart. The captain is a cold, unpersonable man but he is good at his job and his loyalty and dedication are unquestionable.

Description

Volten is broad and stout, but rather powerful despite his middle aged spread. His face has grown long and heavily lined, with deep dark rings under the eyes. He wears his hair long in the manner of a warrior, but not long enough to be audacious or boastful, and the small beard he keeps hide many of the hard lines around his down-turned mouth.

Personality

Stern and deeply pragmatic, Volten earned his moniker Coldeyes from his ability to stare down men who stand against him. Efficient, capable and very skilled in combat Volten seems to live for little except his duty. Never married, no heirs and seemingly little humour in his life Volten is something of an enigma to his followers and his adversaries alike.

History

Volten is the loyal Captain of the House Guard of Baron Sigar Ur-Ghiere. A veteran of the Tarabat army, and former commander of the guard of that City. As a reward for his loyal service, after being overlooked for a command position in the King of Tarabat’s army Volten has been semi-retired in Tohl as a Guard Captain. If he is bitter about this lateral movement he does nothing to show it.

Associations

Volten is not especially well-liked back in Tarabat, and his men in Tohl are beginning to learn why. But he is a capable leader, and an excellent soldier, and does not seem to care whether or not he is liked. Despite being generally disliked Volten is a consummate professional, and few men find it hard not to respect him. As a result Volten has few enemies and fewer friends. His new employer Sigar is a little intimidated by the sour captain, and as a result he takes every opportunity to remind Volten that it is he who is the master, giving imperious commands that Volten follows to the letter without question, but it is clear when Volten receives an order that he sees as foolish. One of the few men who respects Volten enough to like the man is Holt Uth-Lewen, but the King of Tarabat still considered the man a detriment to the morale of his men.
